Design Thinking

Design thinking is a methodology as well as an ideology. For the consumer to have a positive experience and receive the results they desire, difficult problems must be solved in a user-centric manner.ย

ย

This idea was developed as a means of applying the methods and strategies that designers employ to issues and niches that they generally avoid.ย

ย

Since the idea has expanded from being solely focused on design to being used in a variety of disciplines, including engineering, architecture, and even business, the term “design thinking” has gained popularity.ย

ย

For instance, thinking like a designer can help solve challenges with organizational development and design, business or marketing problems within a company, or concerns that don’t truly fit within the design category. Design thinking aids in consumer attention and helps you determine their true needs and wants from a business standpoint.ย

The 4 Ds of Design Thinking

DISCOVER

The best way to discover a problem is to interact with people in their natural environment, look at the world in a fresh way, notice new things and gather insights.

ย

This acts as a sample to understand how a larger population will react to what you have for them.ย

DEFINE

When the problem is discovered, answer the following questions to develop a clear brief that frames the fundamental design challenge:ย

๐Ÿ”ฆ Which matters most?ย

๐Ÿ”ฆ Which should we act on first?ย

๐Ÿ”ฆ What is feasible?ย

ย

While defining a problem, one needs to take care as a designer that youโ€™re designing a product around a user not trying to program a user around a product.ย

DEVELOP

In this stage, the concepts are created, prototyped, tested and iterated at this stage. This process of trial and error helps designers to refine their ideas by reducing risk. Also, in this step, different departments (engineers, developers, designers) are put together that helps in speeding up problem-solving.ย

ย

Microsoft calls this โ€œImplementโ€ while Virgin Atlantic Airways called it โ€œDesignโ€. Microsoftโ€™s philosophy is that designers should โ€œeat their own dog foodโ€ which means designers are to use their own creations in their work, so they can be in the userโ€™s shoes.ย

ย

Some methods used in developing ideas are:ย

๐Ÿ”ฆ Brainstormingย

๐Ÿ”ฆ Mind mappingย

๐Ÿ”ฆ Visualizationย

๐Ÿ”ฆ Laddering techniqueย

๐Ÿ”ฆ Making of different scenariosย

DELIVER

This stage is equally important to be addressed. Many excellent product flounder because of poor delivery. At this stage, the resulting project (a product, service, or environment) is finalized, produced, and launched.ย
