The future of gamification lies in its ability to become invisible.
Donald Farmer, vice president of innovation and design at Qlik, shared his opinion on the current state of gamification in the workplace in a recent interview with Digital News Asia.
Farmer believes that gamification has reached a critical tipping point- gamification has stopped being a novelty and is now at a stage where it is being taken seriously as a useful and viable tool in the workplace.
Gamification can help shape behaviour in various directions, as has been proven in several different scenarios by now. Farmer highlights gamification’s ability to provide a “flow” in any company, such that employees feel in control of their career and what they are doing, achieving their goals and targets in a systematic and functional manner.
However, it is not all working seamlessly yet.
Farmer has an explanation why gamification might not be reaching its full potential, and providing its maximum benefits in the workplace. As he mentioned in the interview, “the biggest mistake is to think that gamification alone will help- it will not.”
Instead, managers must:
- Fully understand the goals that they are trying to reach. SMART goals.
- The introduction of “winners and losers” is not always beneficial. The use of competition in gamification must be used lightly to ensure employees are not swa
- The games must be culturally sensitive.
- The company must ensure employees dont ecome too involved with the gaming aspects of gamification.
Farmer believes that the success of gamification, and the most interesting and helpful applications, will come from its ability to become invisible. From its ability to someday become integrated into our daily lives while becoming a norm.
